The Kennedy Institute of Ethics seeks a Managing Editor for Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics, a prestigious international forum for interdisciplinary studies in the ethics of health care and in the philosophy and methodology of medical practice and biomedical research. Duties include organizing the operations of the journal, communicating with the Editor-in-Chief, authors, referees, and the Press, finding referees for articles, copy-editing articles, and putting together issues for Editor-in-Chief review. Some background knowledge in philosophy and graduate level knowledge of academic scholarship is required; a PhD candidate in the humanities is preferred.
The primary job will be to work with articles and book reviews from submission to publication. Once a paper is accepted or a review is received, it will be the Managing Editor’s job to work with the author on the final edits and style, perform copy-editing, and to coordinate with the publisher (Springer-Nature) in preparing the paper for publication. The Managing Editor will be expected to work 15 hours per week during the academic year and over breaks in this research assistantship.
Some experience working for an academic journal is highly desirable.
The position begins August 25, 2021 and ends May 25, 2022. The expected hours worked per week during the fall/spring semesters is 15. This position counts as a graduate student fellowship, and runs for one year, including the summer, with the possibility of renewal. The pay rate is the equivalent of a buyout of the student’s annual service stipend or the Fall and Spring stipend rate of $33,150 and the rate for a Fall, Spring and Summer stipend is $36,210
The Managing Editor will report to Professor Daniel P. Sulmasy, Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Senior Research Scholar, André Hellegers Professor of Biomedical Ethics, and Editor in Chief of the Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics journal.
