Scholar Discusses Palliative Care in Chile

KIE Senior Research Scholar John Keown was one of the invited speakers at an international conference on palliative sedation and euthanasia held on August 23-24, 2011, at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago.

In his presentation Keown discussed legal perspectives on palliative sedation at the end of life. Other invited speakers included Drs. Joseph Boyle, William Sullivan, Gary Rodin, and Professor Blair Henry, who offered perspectives on the subject from fields such as theoretical ethics, clinical ethics, psychology and family medicine. During his week-long stay in Santiago, Keown also had a full itinerary of other meetings and speaking engagements, including a meeting with academic deans and former judges at the Constitutional Court, a presentation on the ethics of war to members of the Center for Bioethics at the University, and a presentation on euthanasia to an audience of graduate students. All in all, the conference and the other events provided unique occasions for Keown to represent the KIE in an international setting to discuss key issues in bioethics.
