New book co-edited by KIE’s Reynolds published June 2025
On June 23, 2025 Joel Michael Reynolds, Kennedy Institute of Ethics senior scholar, PCCB faculty member, and associate professor of philosophy and disability studies, published his fourth book, The Art of Flourishing: Conversations on Disability, with co-editors Liz Bowen, Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, and Erik Parens.
Breaking into the top 2 best-selling ethics books on Amazon, the project was funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities program created to promote public conversations about humanities questions of enduring interest, in this case, the meaning of human flourishing and disability.
Available from Oxford University Press , the book “presents an original and accessible engagement with questions and concepts that are central to the fields of bioethics, disability studies, and other health humanities, such as: autonomy and self-determination, narrative and epistemic justice, and intersections of disability identity and medicalization; discusses visual art, poetry, and dance within several of the conversations, as it explores the potential for art practices to support disability identity, advocacy, and flourishing; and provides evidence for policy objectives through first-person accounts of supportive and unsupportive environments in specific contexts, such as health care and education.”
